2019 Fall CoReq Academy

2019 Fall CoReq Academy

November 11, 2019
Middle Georgia State University

The 2019 Fall Corequisite Academy took take place on November 11 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Hatcher Professional Sciences Center on the Campus of Middle Georgia State University in Macon. The Academy provided an opportunity for institutional teams to continue to learn from one another on the pedagogies, structure, supports, and practices that support excellence in corequisite Learning Support. The Academy included general sessions in the morning and English and mathematics tracks in the afternoon to address subject-matter specific challenges.

This event was designed to support the work of faculty from Learning Support and gateway collegiate courses in mathematics and English, academic advisors and Learning Support staff.

Anyone who wants to learn more about what works in Learning Support (developmental education/remediation) should consider attending meetings where people present their work in improving Learning Support.  These are great opportunities to learn more and to learn from peers.  Two such upcoming opportunities are:

  • Georgia Association for Developmental Education (GADE) – This is a Georgia group, but not restricted to USG. Current President is our own Deborah Manson (Georgia State University/Perimeter Campus). Presentations at their annual meeting have been very informative.  The GADE website is https://gadeonline.net/.  This year’s meeting will be February 6 – 7, 2020 at St. Simons Island (King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort).  Meeting information can be accessed at:  https://gadeonline.net/gade-conference-2020.
  • National Organization for Student Success (NOSS – formerly NADE: National Association for Developmental Education) – This is a national group, usually with very active Georgia participation.  Again, informative presentations from a variety of perspectives. The NOSS website is https://thenoss.org/.  This year’s meeting will be March 4 – 7, 2020 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville (a little more than a 4 hour drive). Meeting information can be accessed at:  https://thenoss.org/Student-Success-Conference  Note that there is a substantial discount for early registration ($395 vs. $445 or $495).  The deadline for early registration is this Friday, November 15.

Some institutions indicated that it is a challenge for them to connect corequisite and collegiate sections in Banner.  The Ellucian Customer Center provides instructions on how to schedule corequisite sections in Banner such as is commonly done with science lecture and lab sections.  There’s a page on this in the Learning Support Manual (page 39). If you are having difficulty with this, the links to Ellucian on this page may be helpful.
